Privacy fencing has never looked better. We explore the top options for creating a secure, private and attractive garden boundary.
Top Fencing Options for Privacy in Your Garden
Whether you're screening out neighbours, creating a safe play area for children or simply adding a stylish boundary to your garden, choosing the right fence is important. Here are the top options we install at Tru-Pro.
1. Closeboard (Featheredge) Fencing
Closeboard fencing is the most popular privacy fencing in the UK for good reason. Individual featheredge boards are nailed to horizontal rails, slightly overlapping to create a solid, gap-free barrier. It's robust, good-looking and cost-effective.
Height options: Up to 1.8m standard (planning permission required above this).
Lifespan: 15–25 years with treatment.
2. Composite Fencing
Composite fencing panels are made from a combination of wood fibre and recycled plastic, giving the appearance of wood without the maintenance. They won't rot, warp or need annual treatment — making them ideal for busy households.
Best for: Low-maintenance gardens, modern aesthetics.
Lifespan: 25+ years.
3. Lap Panel Fencing
Traditional lap panels are the budget-friendly option. They provide good privacy and are widely available. However, they're not as robust as closeboard and are more susceptible to wind damage if not well-supported.
Best for: Sheltered gardens, budget-conscious projects.
4. Slatted Fence Panels
Slatted panels — with horizontal or vertical gaps between boards — have become increasingly popular for their contemporary aesthetic. They offer partial privacy while still allowing light and air through, making them ideal for modern gardens.
5. Trellis Topper
Adding a trellis section to the top of a solid fence is a great way to add height and interest without requiring planning permission (in most cases). Combined with climbing plants, it creates a beautiful natural screen.
Installation Matters
All our fencing is installed on concrete posts set in concrete, with gravel boards at the base to prevent timber from sitting in contact with wet soil. This dramatically extends the life of any fence. Contact Tru-Pro for a free fencing quote.
