Block Paving vs Resin Driveways: Which Is Better?

Choosing between block paving and resin? We compare both options on cost, durability, maintenance and appearance to help you make the right choice.

Block Paving vs Resin Driveways: Which Should You Choose?

Two of the most popular driveway choices in the UK today are block paving and resin bound surfacing. Both offer excellent results, but they suit different budgets, styles and priorities. Here's a head-to-head comparison to help you decide.

Appearance

Block paving gives a traditional, structured look with visible joints between each block. It's available in a wide range of colours and laying patterns — herringbone being the most popular.

Resin driveways offer a sleek, seamless finish that looks very contemporary. The smooth surface with exposed aggregate gives a premium, modern aesthetic that many homeowners prefer today.

Cost

Block paving tends to be slightly cheaper to install than resin on a per-m² basis, though costs vary with the block specification chosen. Resin is typically priced at a similar or slightly higher rate, but the long-term maintenance costs are often lower.

Durability

Both surfaces are highly durable when properly installed. Block paving can be lifted and relaid if utilities need access — a practical advantage. Resin is UV-stable and won't fade, but a damaged section may need patching.

Maintenance

Block paving can suffer from weeds growing in the joints over time. It requires periodic re-sanding, jet washing and occasional re-sealing.

Resin driveways have no joints for weeds to grow in, making them virtually maintenance-free. An occasional jet wash is all that's needed.

Drainage (SUDS Compliance)

Resin bound driveways are fully porous and SUDS-compliant — rainwater drains straight through the surface. Permeable block paving is available, but standard block paving is not porous.

Our Verdict

If you want a modern, low-maintenance driveway with excellent drainage, a resin driveway is hard to beat. If you prefer a more traditional look and want the ability to access utilities easily, block paving remains a great choice. Get in touch with Tru-Pro for a free quote on either option.
