How to Maintain Your Patio Through Winter

Winter can be tough on patios. Our guide explains how to protect your paving through the cold months and keep it looking great year after year.

How to Maintain Your Patio Through Winter

British winters can be tough on garden paving. Frost, ice, rain and moss can all take their toll. The good news is that with a little preparation, your patio will come through looking as good as ever.

1. Give It a Thorough Clean Before Winter

Before temperatures drop, jet wash your patio to remove dirt, algae, moss and any organic debris sitting in the joints. Organic matter left on paving over winter will decompose, staining the surface and potentially causing biological growth in spring.

2. Apply a Quality Patio Sealer

For natural stone and porcelain, a penetrating sealer helps to repel water and prevent frost damage. Sealed paving is also much easier to clean in spring. Re-seal every 2–3 years for best results.

3. Treat for Moss and Algae

Autumn is the time for moss to return — especially in shaded areas. Apply a moss and algae treatment in late autumn to stop growth in its tracks. Look for a product that's safe for your paving type.

4. Clear Fallen Leaves Promptly

Wet leaves sitting on paving are a slipping hazard and will leave tannin stains if left for extended periods. Sweep or blow leaves away regularly through autumn and early winter.

5. Avoid Rock Salt for De-Icing

It's tempting to scatter rock salt when ice forms, but this can damage natural stone, affect grout and joint sand, and harm nearby plants. Use a plastic shovel to clear ice and, if needed, a patio-safe de-icer.

6. Check Pointing and Joints

Autumn is a good time to check whether any joints need re-pointing. Water entering loose joints and then freezing can lift slabs. Raking out and re-filling loose joints before winter prevents this.

7. Protect Furniture and Accessories

Store or cover garden furniture, planters and ornaments over winter. Heavy planters left on natural stone can cause staining and even cracking as water expands in frost.
